Everton was notified this day that they will have a significant points reduction this season and all this after an exhaustive investigation by the Premier League. This is the largest penalty in the team's history, all for violating the competition's financial regulations. There are a total of 10 points that the club has lost in the current league.

The Liverpool city club has been accused of breaching the Premier League's profitability and sustainability rules. The club was referred to an independent commission last March for alleged breaches related to the 2021/22 season. The basis for the sanction is that clubs can lose a maximum of £105 million ($128.4 million) over three years, but Everton recorded losses of £370 million between 2018 and 2021.

This sanction against Everton can create a precedent for the rest of the clubs in the league, and there are two that are looking very closely at this case: Manchester City and Chelsea. Chelsea have also been accused of incomplete financial information, relating to transactions made between 2012 and 2019. UEFA fined them €10 million, but the Premier League is still investigating.

Will Chelsea be sanctioned?

Now, and in the absence of the appeal that Everton will make, the sanction has now become effective, which causes a dangerous precedent regarding the sanctions they could receive. On the other hand, the Manchester team coached by Pep Guardiola was charged with more than 100 counts of financial fair play last season. The Premier League has not yet given a verdict on that case.
