Everton and Chelsea met at Goodison Park on Sunday in the 34th round of the Premier League. The Toffees, in need of points to get out of the relegation zone, achieved a valuable victory against the Blues, who for the second consecutive match without a win, put in trouble their participation in the Champions League next season.

In a match with few emotions and few offensive plays by both teams, a mistake in the defensive backline of the visiting team, marked the course of the match.

A Chelsea team that looked disconnected and tired after having played in midweek against Manchester United came out with the same eleven as against the Red Devils except for a change in midfield, where Kanté was not even on the bench, and in his place came Ruben Loftus-Cheek.

On the other hand, Everton, who had just lost to Liverpool in the Merseyside derby, had the heroes of the match in England international Jordan Pickford and Brazilian Richarlison, who appeared to give the Toffees the victory.

Defensive error capitalized by the Brazilian

Everton's goal came in the 46th minute, right at the start of the second half. Chelsea played the ball on the defensive line and Azpilicueta, after receiving a pass, was slow to get rid of the ball, which Richarlison took advantage of to steal it and was one on one against Mendy, Chelsea's goalkeeper, who could not stop the shot of the Toffee striker.

This goal was enough for Lampard's side to defend their lead and take the win. Thomas Tuchel tried to reverse the situation by bringing on Mateo Kovacic in place of Jorginho, Ziyech for Werner, and Pulisic for Azpilicueta.

However, apart from one play-in attack after a shot by Croatian Kovacic was saved by Pickford, nothing else happened. The Blues looked inoperative in attack and the Toffees, with their defensive order, kept a clean sheet.

With this defeat, Chelsea again dropped points and in their last 5 games they have only 7 points, a situation that could compromise their third place in the Premier League. If Arsenal wins against West Ham United, they would be only 4 points behind the Blues and with 4 games left they could snatch the place.

Meanwhile, Everton with a game in hand, if they win, they could move out of the relegation zone and thus overtake Leeds United and Burnley, however, if not, they will remain in 18th position and the risk of relegation to the second division remains latent.
