The VAR in England unleashed a major controversy in recent days after Tottenham defeated Liverpool thanks to a tremendous video referee error that ended up benefiting the London team. After the match, the complaints from Jurgen Klopp and several Liverpool players did not wait long. For this reason, some issues and rules of video refereeing would now be changed in the current season.
The Premier League has finally responded to Liverpool's clamor for forceful decisions after the controversial goal disallowed by Luis Díaz in last week's match against Tottenham (2-1). After sanctioning the members of the VAR, the English championship, through the PGMOL, the entity in charge of arbitration in that country, has modified the protocol in search of preventing situations like that of that match in London from being repeated again.
According to The Athletic, the new protocol has already begun to be used this weekend, in which all eyes were on the performance of the refereeing. From now on, the members of the cabin are obliged to take the necessary time to make the correct decision, regardless of whether the match is stopped for longer than was usually wasted in the Premier.
On the other hand, the PGMOL, chaired by former referee Howard Webb, will continue to periodically publish the audios of each English championship match as long as they are explained in the association's internal program. In the match between Liverpool and Tottenham, after reviewing the play, England contacted Simon Hooper, central referee of the match, and told him “check completed”, prompting the restart of the game from the free kick in favor of Tottenham. The citizens thus gave up the lead in the championship and fell to third place in the table, behind Arsenal, which is now second with the same points as its classic rival.
