Sandro Tonali has given one of the most surreal cases so far this year. The Italian midfielder is being investigated for illegal sports betting and could face a severe sanction if it is proven that he bet on the result of his team. However, Newcastle has no time to waste and is already thinking about a possible replacement for the Italian for January 2024, thinking about his current status in the UEFA Champions League.

In an official statement, the English team confirmed the rumors from Sandro Tonali. “Newcastle can confirm that Tonali is being investigated in relation to illegal betting. He is committed to the investigation and will continue to collaborate with authorities. He and his family will continue to receive the support of the club,” confirmed the Magpie team regarding the Italian national team player and star signing of the team.

According to Daily Telegraph, Juventus and Newcastle are expected to be forced into the market to find cover for Nicolo Fagioli and Sandro Tonali, while Tottenham's new technical director Johan Lange is a big fan of Kalvin Phillips. Although Fagioli has been punished with seven months, Tonali's sanction could reach up to three years. However, as the player is cooperating well with the authorities, the penalty could be reduced.

How serious could Sandro Tonali's sanction be?

According to the 'Gazzetta dello Sport', having bet in favor of Milan (winner) or on results in which his name was not involved, the penalty is less. In fact, his action would be subject to article 24 of the Code of Sports Justice, which sanctions those who "bet on football." Article 30, on the other hand, speaks of "direct acts that alter the development or result of a competition." The punishment can be up to 1 year without being able to play professionally in European football.
