Rumors have begun to emerge from Europe that Pep Guardiola has his eye on Uruguayan Maximiliano Araújo to make him his next signing for Manchester City, in what is expected to be a million-dollar offer, but of which Puebla de la Franja would no longer receive any percentage, since all relations ended after his arrival at Sporting Lisbon.

The charrúa was signed by the Camoteros in 2020 for a figure that was well under $1 million and then was able to sell him to Toluca for around $5 million in 2023, although he kept a percentage of the player's chip that allowed him to earn around $3 million after the Diablos Rojos sold him to Portugal this summer.

At 24 years of age, the Charrúa continues to stand out now in the Lisbon club and that has aroused the interest of Guardiola, who is always interested in young players who can have an even greater projection and although there has been no talk of amounts, Manchester City could easily pay between 30 and 40 million for Araújo.

However, Puebla's scope with the charrúa ended after the transaction between Toluca and Sporting Lisbon, so the only club that could receive a percentage of the sale to Manchester City would be precisely Puebla, which included a clause in the negotiation with the Portuguese to receive money for a future sale.

Maximiliano Araújo played a total of 83 games with Puebla de la Franja in 3 years, scoring eight goals and providing seven assists, in addition to participating in five league games with the institution. While with Toluca he played 68 games and scored 11 goals in one year.

Guardiola's City: A Stumbling Giant

Manchester City, under the tutelage of Pep Guardiola, has been a dominant force in English football for several years. However, the 2023-2024 season has seen a significant decline in their performance, raising questions about the future of the club and the tactical genius of Guardiola himself.

A Series of Uncharacteristic Setbacks

The Citizens have suffered a series of unexpected defeats and draws, a stark contrast to their usual dominance. Key factors contributing to this decline include:

  • Defensive Fragility: Once renowned for their solid defense, City have been vulnerable to counter-attacks and individual errors. The absence of key defenders like Ruben Dias has exposed their defensive frailties.
  • Midfield Struggles: The midfield, once the engine room of the team, has lacked creativity and control. The absence of Rodri has been particularly felt, as his ability to dictate the tempo of the game is irreplaceable.
  • Tactical Miscalculations: Guardiola's tactical acumen has been questioned in recent matches. His insistence on a certain style of play, even when it's not working, has led to predictable and ineffective performances.
  • Player Fatigue: The relentless schedule of domestic and European competitions has taken its toll on the City players. The lack of adequate rest and rotation has affected their performance levels.

The Impact on Guardiola's Legacy

Guardiola's reputation as one of the greatest managers of all time is undoubtedly at stake. His ability to consistently deliver success has been a hallmark of his career, but the recent struggles have raised doubts about his tactical adaptability and his ability to manage a squad over an extended period.

The Road Ahead

To regain their form and challenge for titles, Manchester City must address the following issues:

  • Strengthen the Defense: Investing in a quality defender to partner with Ruben Dias is crucial.
  • Revamp the Midfield: Finding a suitable replacement for Rodri or developing a new midfield partnership is essential.
  • Adapt Tactical Approach: Guardiola may need to adjust his tactics to suit the current squad and the challenges posed by opponents.
  • Manage Player Load: Implementing a more effective rotation policy can help prevent injuries and fatigue.

The future of Manchester City remains uncertain. While the club has the resources and the talent to bounce back, it is clear that significant changes are needed to restore their dominance. Guardiola's ability to navigate this challenging period will be a true test of his managerial prowess.
