Matias Almeyda left Liga MX on June 2018 after three years as the head coach of Chivas. The manager left incredible memories, gaining very important titles and showing his conditions to manage a very important team. Since then, he has been the trainer of San José Earthquakes MLS side, where he arrived on January 2019 and has a contract until 2022.

Almeyda’s name appeared many times on Mexican clubs’ radar after his departure. Recently it was rumored that Cruz Azul tried to sign him. Superdeportivo published that the Argentine received an offer from the club that has no head coach actually, after the departure of Robert Dante Siboldi more than 15 days ago.

Surprisingly, Cruz Azul has started the preseason for Guard1anes 2021 and the new coach hasn’t yet arrived. The sport advisers have been working to find the replacement and, despite Almeyda, some other names as the ones of Hugo Sánchez, Alfonso Sosa or Sebastián Beccacece appeared.

As reported by local press, Almeyda asked for a player when contacted by Cruz Azul and, after the impossibility to sign the playmaker, they couldn’t make the signing of the coach. Almeyda asked for Rodolfo Pizarro, the no. 10 who arrived to Inter Miami on February 2020 for $11 million and passed through Pachuca, Chivas and Monterrey in Mexico.
