The US got ahead: discover the player who could have played for Mexico but they didn't called him and now he will join the USMNT
There was a possibility that a young star of the European soccer could play for Mexico's national team, but he was not called and the USMNT called him up.
Born in the United States, Richard Ledezma was called up by Gregg Berhalter for the USMNT for the friendly matches against Wales (on November 12) and against Panama (November 16) and thus, the possibility that he plays for the national team of Mexico has ended.
Richie, Ledezma's nickname, is a product of the American MLS academies. The 20-year-old footballer made his debut as a professional footballer in 2018 when he played for Real Monarchs, the Real Salt Lake team that competes the USL Championship. In that same year, Ledezma was named a 2018 Western Conference Player by the U.S. Soccer Development Academy in the U18/19 category.
The American soccer helped him make the leap to Europe and join PSV Eindhoven for his youth team, Jong PSV. Six months later Richie was called up for the first time by the PSV first team to face AZ Alkmaar, although he wasn't sent into the field and stayed on the bench. He made his debut for PSV last Saturday in a 4-0 win over Den Haag.
Ledezma was summoned up by the U-19 of the USMNT in 2018. Quickly, he was called by the U-20 category. And now he has the chance to make his full debut in the USMNT. This leaves very few chances for the Mexican national team to be able to count on him although they still have hope. These matches are friendly and so the USMNT won't be able to ensure that Richard Ledezma played for them the rest of his life.
