Héctor Herrera's tenure in Atlético de Madrid has been tough since the beginning. The Mexican player, who was comfortable at FC Porto, where he was both starter and the teams captain, accepted the challenge of joining an European giant besides his elevated age.
But now Diego Simeone has demonstrate once again that he doesn't consider him a top class player and even consider leaving him go. When Thomas Partey was transferred to Arsenal FC Herrera though that he would earn a protagonist role in the team since Atlético had only bought Lucas Torreira.
But his dreams won't be achieved since Atlético Madrid announced today that they had bought Frenchman Geoffrey Kondogbia, a Valencia CF center-midfielder who plays in the same position as Herrera. Back in July, when Atlético Madrid was convinced that Thomas Partey would stay, Simeone commented that they would only sign Torreira if Herrera was sold first.
So, now that Kondogbia is on the team Simeone has five top class center-midfielders with the reinforcement, Herrera, Uruguayan Torreira, and Spaniards Koke and Saúl. The Spanish duo is part of the regular starting team. Torreira seems to be on the same way. And Kondogbia's signing looks like a reinforcement for the bench. So, where does Héctor Herrera ends in this? It seems like his tenure in Atlético de Madrid is over.
