
In an exclusive interview with Erasmus FC, Jorge Gutiérrez, who served as Manchester City’s chef from 2017 to 2023, opened up about the challenges of catering to a multicultural football squad. With players hailing from around the globe, Gutiérrez revealed that balancing individual dietary preferences was no easy task.
Among the standout personalities in the kitchen was Erling Haaland, whose unique culinary tastes reflect his upbringing and connections. “He formed a bond with a Norwegian company that supplies an exclusive salmon prepared for the royal family,” Gutiérrez shared, highlighting the striker’s refined palate.
Despite his Viking-like image, Haaland’s culinary preferences reveal a different side. “Erling, although he might not seem like it, is a real gourmet,” Gutiérrez noted. He even mentioned Haaland’s childhood friend, the acclaimed chef Dani García, as a significant influence.
“Haaland knows how to appreciate a good oyster, high-quality sushi—you name it. His table is always a culinary adventure,” the Spanish chef added.
Gutiérrez also addressed the buzz surrounding Haaland’s rumored diet of raw organs, which sparked curiosity and debate a few years ago. “There was a bit of controversy about him eating hearts and livers. Typically, we include those in diets for iron recovery—but cooked and mixed, not raw,” Gutiérrez clarified with a laugh. “The image people have—of a Viking devouring human hearts—is quite exaggerated.”
For Gutiérrez, working with a club as diverse as Manchester City meant navigating a wide range of culinary demands, from traditional British dishes to international gourmet requests. Haaland’s approach to food, blending Norwegian heritage with a taste for global delicacies, stood out as particularly unique.
