The relationship between Real Valladolid fans and their owner, former Brazilian footballer Ronaldo Nazário, is more strained than ever following the team's surprising elimination from the Copa del Rey by Ourense, a team from the Primera Federación. This Sunday’s defeat at O Couto sparked a wave of criticism, with one of the most notable comments coming from Minister of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, Óscar Puente.
Puente, former mayor of Valladolid, took to social media to make an ironic remark about Ronaldo’s unfulfilled promises, referencing comments made by the ex-player in 2019. At the time, Ronaldo stated that the club would be fighting for a Champions League spot within five years. "The 'Champions in five years' thing is due, right?" Puente wrote sarcastically, alluding to the unmet promises of the club’s owner. The minister did not stop there.
In a second post, Puente seized the opportunity to remind Ronaldo about the uncompleted promise to build the club’s Sports City. With irony, the politician pointed out that it’s "coming soon," referring to the project that has been repeatedly delayed.
The discontent among fans is nothing new. Since Ronaldo took over the club, Real Valladolid has been a "yo-yo" team, alternating between LaLiga EA Sports and LaLiga Hypermotion, and this season seems to be headed for another relegation battle. Promises of a bright future under Ronaldo’s ownership have been overshadowed by underwhelming performances on the pitch. Even the arrival of Diego Cocca as manager, following the dismissal of Paulo Pezzolano, hasn’t improved the results.
The Copa del Rey elimination, despite the team taking the lead twice, was a heavy blow for the club’s supporters. The defeat to Ourense added to a long list of disappointments, and fan patience is running thin. Meanwhile, Ronaldo continues with his plans to run for president of the Brazilian Football Confederation, but he is also considering selling the club due to the growing unrest surrounding his management.
