At Villa Park, it was Maguire who shone the most in central defence with Varane looking a little off-pace as part of a defensive line that was stretched throughout the evening. United's problem is that, given the injury situation, it is still their best partnership, though it is still flawed.

It can be hard to forget just how doomed Maguire's time at the club looked a year ago. Now, he is not only their most dependable central defender; he is also their best. Maguire made the difference with his excellent assist for Rasmus Hojlund's first-half goal, but he also made a huge impact at the other end of the pitch with some vital blocks and last-ditch defensive work. In front of the watchful gaze of Gareth Southgate, Maguire once again showed exactly why he is indispensable for both club and country with the type of resolute defensive work his managers both deem priceless.
