In a recent interview with Infobae, Julian Alvarez shared the deep meaning behind his celebration looking up to the sky after scoring against Real Madrid. The gesture, which is also characteristic of Lionel Messi, has an emotional connection for the Argentine forward. Alvarez explained that his celebration was dedicated to his grandmother, who passed away some time ago and was always a very important figure in his life.

The connection with his grandmother and the message from his mum

Julian revealed that the celebration was not a coincidence. Before the match against Bayer Leverkusen, his mother sent him a message asking him to dedicate a goal to the sky if he scored. "It seems you have a magic ball," Alvarez joked, referring to the surprising coincidence between the moment his mum sent the message and the events that followed.

Alvarez explained that he chose January 19, his grandmother's birthday, as the day he arrived at Manchester City, and he has always kept the memories and affection for his grandmother close. "We spent a lot of time at her house, she was a very important person," said the forward. This dedication to the sky after each goal has a personal and special meaning that connects to his love for his family and the memory of his grandmother.

A gesture of love for his grandfather

But the dedication did not end there. In the match against Real Madrid, Julian Alvarez also remembered his maternal grandfather, whom he never had the chance to meet, but to whom his mother sent some heartfelt words before the match. "My mum wrote to me before the game and said, 'If you score, you didn’t meet your grandfather, but he would have loved you more than his own life,'" the player revealed.

It was because of this emotional message that Alvarez dedicated his goal to the sky, as a way of honouring both his grandmother and his grandfather. In this sense, his gesture reflects the strong bond he has with his family, despite the distance and passage of time.

The comparison with Messi and his symbolic dedication

Just like Lionel Messi, who has dedicated many of his goals to the sky in honour of his grandmother, Julian Alvarez adopts a symbolic and heartfelt tradition towards his loved ones, who are no longer present. This gesture of paying tribute to family members, as an act of love and remembrance, strengthens the emotional connection that binds players to their roots and those who have supported them throughout their careers.

The goal against Real Madrid was not only a victory for Manchester City but also a spiritual moment for Alvarez, who, through his celebration, showed his gratitude and love for his family.
