Former Real Madrid forward Karim Benzema and other notable French players made headlines after reports surfaced regarding their voting choices for France’s Player of the Year. Benzema, now with Al-Ittihad, notably omitted Kylian Mbappe from his picks, opting instead for Eduardo Camavinga, Bradley Barcola, and Warren Zaire-Emery. Similarly, N’Golo Kante left Mbappe off his list, favoring William Saliba, Jules Kounde, and Camavinga.
Despite these omissions, Mbappe triumphed, earning 56 points to claim the title of France Footballer of the Year for the fourth time. He edged out Arsenal’s William Saliba by five points, with AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan rounding out the top three.
Mbappe’s award comes on the back of an extraordinary 2023-24 season with Paris Saint-Germain (PSG). The French forward recorded an impressive 44 goals and 10 assists across 48 matches for the Ligue 1 side. Additionally, he captained Les Bleus to the semi-finals of Euro 2024, contributing one goal and two assists before their elimination at the hands of eventual champions Spain.
Now at Real Madrid following a high-profile free transfer in the summer, Mbappe has continued to deliver, albeit not yet at his PSG-level dominance. He has registered 12 goals and two assists in 22 appearances for Los Blancos, proving his continued value on the pitch.
Mbappe’s remarkable season has been interrupted by a minor muscle injury sustained during Real Madrid’s 3-2 victory over Atalanta in the Champions League on December 10. The forward scored a brilliant opening goal in the 10th minute before being substituted due to the injury in the 35th minute.
Carlo Ancelotti, Real Madrid’s manager, later reassured fans that the injury was not serious. However, Mbappe was left out of the squad for their December 14 La Liga clash with Rayo Vallecano as a precautionary measure.
The French superstar is expected to return in time for Real Madrid’s Intercontinental Cup final against Mexican club Pachuca on December 18. His presence will be crucial as Los Blancos aim to secure another international title.
