Former Juventus captain Giorgio Chiellini has become the latest investor in Mercury/13, a multi-club ownership group focused on growing women's football.

The Italian defender, known for his tenure at Juventus and the Italian national team, has joined the fund as it looks to expand its reach in women's football. Mercury/13, led by Argentine Victoire Cogevina Reynal and Venezuelan Mario Malavé, aims to "lead the potential of women's football" and "reach a massive, albeit often overlooked, audience: female football fans," according to the fund's stated objectives.

After acquiring Como Women, Mercury/13's next step was to bring on board one of the most recognizable faces in world football. Chiellini, who spent most of his career at Juventus and finished his playing days at LAFC, is the first male footballer to support women's football through a multi-club ownership group.

A Bet on Women's Football

It was after his retirement less than a year ago that Chiellini met with the fund. Aware of the rapid growth of women's football in the United States, he decided to invest in this sector, becoming the first male footballer to support women's football through an investment group with the aim of multi-ownership.

"I am really excited to share that I have joined Mercury/13 as an investor. It is a fund focused on supporting and growing women's football globally," Chiellini declared on X. "After spending time in the US, I saw the incredible progress that women's football is making there and how much potential it still has to develop in Europe. That inspired me and I am proud to be part of a project that seeks to create new opportunities for athletes and take the sport to the next level internationally," he added.

Co-CEO Victoire Cogevina Reynal welcomed the new investor: "We are delighted to have Giorgio Chiellini join us as an investor, further validating our mission and the commercial potential of women's football in Europe." "His commitment reflects the growing recognition and support for women's football at the highest levels. Mercury/13's strategy of acquiring teams in European leagues will amplify our impact, and Giorgio's participation is a powerful endorsement of our vision and strategy," she concluded.
