Sporting CP may be on the verge of receiving the Christmas gift they've been hoping for. British outlet CaughtOffside reported on Wednesday afternoon that Arsenal have given up on their pursuit of Viktor Gyökeres, a long-time target for the London club.

Mikel Arteta is keen to strengthen his attack with a striker when the transfer window reopens in January, but it seems the Swedish forward is no longer the preferred option. The Gunners are now focusing their attention on Argentine striker Mateo Retegui.

However, Arsenal won't have a clear run at the Atalanta player. Paris Saint-Germain are also keeping a close eye on the South American striker.

Mateo Retegui, 25, is in his first season with the Bergamo-based club. He has scored 14 goals in 25 matches.

Arsenal fans will undoubtedly be disappointed to hear that the club have decided to end their pursuit of Viktor Gyökeres. The Swedish striker had been a popular figure among supporters, who had been eagerly anticipating his potential arrival at the Emirates Stadium. While it's unclear exactly why Arsenal have opted to look elsewhere, it's possible that the club have been unable to agree terms with Sporting CP, or that they have identified a more suitable target in Mateo Retegui
