Lionel Messi and Gerard Pique seem to soon face some serious issues after a leaked audio was released. An exclusive report from The Objective alleges that Messi and Pique were concerned about losses during the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic and tried to bring in funds from RFEF and UEFA to compensate. FC Barcelona reportedly proposed a 70% wage reduction for the players during the pandemic. Former RFEF president Luis Rubiales had a leaked audio published that demonstrates an attempt to divert duns from UEFA to help the salary issue for the players. Rubiales mentions Messi and Pique in the audio that was sent to UEFA president Aleksander Cefarin. Rubilaes mentioned that Pique and Messi were worried about these conversations being leaked as he said, “They [Pique and Messi] told me clearly that, please, no one should find out that we are talking about our money because, if people find out, they are going to kill us.”
According to The Objective, Rubiales sent a final proposal to Cefarin on April 6th, 2020, by suggesting that 4% of broadcasting rights of all UEFA matches should be redirected and 50% of the funds should be for the pay of players whose salaries were compromised. Pique allegedly spoke with Rubiales on a phone call, and the former Barcelona captain talked about Messi’s concern about the reduction of salaries due to the pandemic. Reports suggest that UEFA and the RFEF did not divert the funds to benefit losses of certain player’s salaries.
According to AS, Pique and Rubiales are currently being investigated on a separate issue regarding the federation selling the rights of the Spanish Super Cup to Saudi groups to divert funds for personal gain. It is unclear as to what punishment Pique and Messi would receive from this scandal.
Rubiales made headlines last summer for the wrong reasons as he kissed Spain women’s striker Jenni Hermoso after Spain won the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup. It was an odd choice to celebrate the victory, and many felt uncomfortable about the situation, including Hermoso. After Rubiales was not fired from his position, the former RFEF president resigned after loads of pressure came from the press.
