All indications are that Erik ten Hag will remain in his job due to the situation at Manchester United, pending the completion of Sir Jim Ratcliffe's 25 per cent stake in the club. However, there is a growing consensus among United fans that the Dutch manager must go after Saturday's 2-0 defeat to West Ham at the London Stadium in the run-up to Boxing Day.

The Hammers further aggravated the crisis of Ten Hag's side, who have not won since 6 December. United have now gone four games without a win and without scoring in all competitions. But with the defeat against West Ham they also equalled a negative record: never since 1930 had Manchester United lost so many games before Christmas in one season: 13. In the 1930-31 English Premier League, the Old Trafford outfit finished last.

If the club's situation continues to put the brakes on Ten Hag's departure, it may be weeks before Sir Jim Ratcliffe's takeover of 25 per cent of Manchester United's shares is completed. The Red Devils have already lost eight games in the current Premiership, in which they are eighth. And they are eliminated from Europe.

Klopp's sacrifice

While this is happening with Erik Ten Hag, at historic rivals Liverpool Jurgen Klopp revealed the sacrifice he would be willing to make for his players. "I was too close to see what happened. Kostas broke his collarbone. I would happily give my collarbone if Kostas could be fit again."
