The Argentine National Team defeated the Paraguayan National Team 1-0 at the Monumental Stadium. Nicolás Otamendi got the 3 points thanks to a great volley goal that he scored when the match was just starting (3'). Rodrigo De Paul took a corner kick from a very wide angle, so that the current captain of the National Team connected it with a spectacular right-footed volley. Although one would imagine that a prepared play by Otamendi would be for a header, the maneuver was designed so that he scored with his right foot, and ultimately that goal was the only one of the match.
As planned before the game, Lionel Messi came on to play for around 40 minutes. When 53 had passed, number 10 replaced Julián Álvarez and received the captain's ribbon from Nicolás Otamendi, even though he wanted to leave it to the Benfica defender from Portugal. With 9 points achieved out of 9 disputed, the Argentine National Team now aims for the match against Peru.
According to what Gastón Edul reported, Lionel Scaloni's idea is for his figure to play in Lima next Tuesday. Unlike today's match against Paraguay, in the Inca territory it would go from the start, or at least that is the primary intention. The next training sessions will define if Messi feels safe enough to play as a starter.
Lionel Messi kicked a corner kick on the right and showed off his great left foot, taking advantage of the profile that that side of the field gave him. Due to the injury he has been carrying since the match against Ecuador, and which sidelined him from several games with Inter Miami, Messi came out as a substitute, just as he had done with the team led by Gerardo Martino recently.
However, his muscle condition did not prevent him from launching a powerful shot against the goal of Carlos Coronel, the New York Red Bulls goalkeeper. The ball crossed the entire Paraguayan fence and closed on the far post, hitting the rival pipe. As if that were not enough, near the end he again had a free kick that hit the same post.
