Barcelona has started a new UEFA Champions League participation with today’s match against Royal Antwerp for the opening week of the prestigious European tournament, and will try to have a better start as Xavi’s team was prematurely eliminated from the competition in the last 2022-2023 season of the Champions League.
Due to Barcelona’s bad performance last season, the Spaniard football league, La Liga, penalized the Blaugranas team with a 28 million dollars fee because of negative fair play. Barcelona’s expectations were aimed higher to at least play Champions League’s quarter finals.
Barcelona has already paid the 28 million dollars fee to La Liga. They won Copa del Rey last year, which they were awarded with four million dollars, reducing the lack of capital they need for the next winter window market, but now, an opportunity has shown up as the UEFA Champions League has begun.
According to information published by Spanish insider and journalist, Sergio Sole, the FC Barcelona could recover the 20 millions dollars fee if Xavi’s team is able to win all six group stage matches and qualify for the Round of 16, the UEFA Champions League committee would prize Barcelona’s performance with 26.4 million euros (about 28.1 mdlls).
Unfortunately, Barcelona FC didn’t have their best performance in the last UEFA Champions League season, where they were eliminated by Inter Milan in the early group stages for the second consecutive year, under the command of Louis Van Gaal.
Xavi Hernandez returned this 2023 to the team who gave him a chance to develop his professional career and where he ended it to now is under his management, where they have been able to win Copa del Rey and Supercoap, two important victories that granted the Blaugrana team their ticket to the UEFA Champions League 2023-2024 season.
