In January 2018, FC Barcelona made official the arrival of Yerry Mina from Palmeiras in Brazil after a pre-agreement between both clubs that had to be brought forward due to the injury of Samuel Umtiti and the request of Javier Mascherano to leave the club. Now, a voice from the culé club referred to the case of the colombian and explained why he failed in Spain.

“It was a different operation (than Arthur's). We had Piqué, Vermalen, Umtiti and Mascherano, we didn't need another center back. However, the director of the second team had been in Colombia looking for new talents and Yerry Mina and Davinson Sánchez were there, the latter went first to Ajax and then to Tottenham. Instead, we made Yerry sign for Barça B and immediately sold him to Palmeiras”, explained Robert Fernández, former sporting director of FC Barcelona, about the colombian's arrival on the ‘Fiorentina.it’ website.

According to what he commented, Mina had first been signed by Barça B that sold him to the brazilians, and the intention was to take him after the World Cup in Russia, but everything changed due to the casualties that arose. In the end he did not end up having the expected consistency and after signing for five seasons he left the club a semester later to go to the Premier League.

The colombian defender arrived this season as a free agent at Fiorentina in Italy, but he has not yet been able to make his debut for his new club. In this regard, Fernández regretted his situation and expressed that Mina had a hard time adapting due to the speed that players in his position in the club had to have and ended up going to Everton, who paid €30.2M fixed and €1.5M in variables: “It was difficult for him to adapt to Barcelona, because defenders have to be very fast and soon after he went to Everton. He has an important physique: he will need time to recover from injuries and play a lot to regain his best condition. I hope he can recover”.
