Real Madrid were proclaimed winter champions with their narrow victory against Mallorca at the Santiago Bernabéu stadium (1-0) on the nineteenth matchday of LaLiga, the last of the first round of the championship, which they won 25 times in the 36 who achieved it to date. It is an honorary recognition that does not guarantee titles but of the last 20 Leagues played in Spain, 16 were won by the teams that were proclaimed winter champions.
In the 2023-24 season, goal difference makes Real Madrid the winter champion, tied on 48 points with a historic Girona, which has the best numbers since its birth. Carlo Ancelotti's team has scored 40 goals and conceded eleven, compared to the 46 scored by the team led by Míchel Sánchez and the 24 conceded.
Real Madrid's defensive record is a record. He had never conceded an average of 0.57 goals per game. In nine of the 19 games played, both Kepa Arrizabalaga and Andriy Lunin kept the goal clean. His best record corresponded to the 1987-88 and 2019-20 seasons, with 0.63 goals per league matchday.
Carlo Ancelotti also equals his best record in a first round in which he was only defeated once, in the Madrid derby against Atlético de Madrid del Metropolitano, and gave up three draws, two as a visitor against Sevilla and Betis and one at the Santiago Bernabéu against Rayo Vallecano. The Italian coach had only reached the figure of 48 points in the first round of the 2014-15 campaign, in which he ended up giving up the title.
It was one of the eleven occasions in which Real Madrid was not proclaimed champion after finishing as leader in the first round. On 25 of the previous 36 occasions, they ended up lifting the league title. He won another 10 Leagues by coming back in the second round.
