The Classic Spanish Derby is a tremendous fight over the two teams of Spain’s capital, with Atletico Madrid taking away Real Madrid’s undefeated streak after they fell 3-1 at the Civitas Stadium, nevertheless, the controversy is always involved in matchups like these and the Metropolitan Derby hasn’t been the exception.
Before the first goal made by Alvaro Morata, former Real Madrid’s striker, a foul was made on Jude Bellingham as he was approaching Atletico's goal, immediately the counter attack came and Morata managed to make the first hat-trick of the match. Fans and even the match commentators noticed the foul but the referee didn’t lift the yellow card.
The second controversy was Camavinga’s denied goal as the referee said it was an offside play. In that same drive, as the midfielder was striking the ball, Gimenez tackled one Real Madrid player in the goal area. The sideline and central referee checked the play on the VAR and decided to deny the red card that was put on him. Luka Modric protested and was instantly penalized with a yellow card.
Atletico Madrid has won the matchup and will take away Real Madrid’s undefeated streak and will be displaced from the third position of the standings, Atletico Madrid will place themselves in the fourth position of the table with 13 points and will be tied with Athletic.
Carlo Ancelotti’s team has suffered their first defeat of the tournament and will have to look forward on bringing again their key players back from the injury reserve list (Carvajal, Militao and Courtois) in order to keep up with the victories if they want to reach the final stage of the league.
Real Madrid will have a tight schedule for the next several weeks, their most easy game will be versus Las Palmas on September 27th; for the eight week of La Liga will be facing Girona who currently is the second best team of the tournament; and for Real Madrid’s second appointment of the UEFA Champions League will be facing Napoli on October the 3rd.
