In August 2021 and surprisingly, Lionel Messi left FC Barcelona. The captain of the Argentine team was betrayed by Joan Laporta, president of the Catalans, who decided to break the negotiations on his renewal. After what happened, the top winner of the Ballon d'Or (7) decided to sign for PSG. Now, the Culé manager recalled what happened with the current world champion and his words outraged the Blaugrana fans.

Despite winning 35 titles, four of them in the Champions League and three Club World Cups, Laporta was not interested in what Leo represented and decided to get rid of him. His justification was that the Catalan team was above any player, given the pressure to comply with the financial fair play. Now, shortly after Messi ends his contract with PSG, the president of Barça referred to what he experienced with the 'Flea' and his statement did not go down well with the fans.

In dialogue with 'La Vanguardia', Laporta indicated that he met with Jorge Messi, father of the Albiceleste captain, but they never spoke about his possible return. In addition, he reiterated that he does not regret having parted ways with the Rosario. "He would go back to take the same decision regarding Leo Messi. The club is above everything and it was complicated".

While the return to Barça is moving away, everything indicates that he could continue at PSG:

Despite the fact that the blaugrana fans dream of the return of the best player in history, Leo confessed that he feels happy in Paris and his words were taken as a nod to his continuity at PSG. Messi's entourage will meet with the Parisian board of directors after the Champions League and the world champion could accept the extension of his contract for one more year.
