It is not a secret that Lionel Messi was one of the projects that generated the most enthusiasm in the youth teams of FC Barcelona. His litter, made up of other renowned players such as Gerard Piqué or Cesc Fábregas, dazzled with his good football and the 'Flea' was one of the pillars. However, there was another footballer who many pointed out as the best in that category, even above Leo.
This is Victor Vazquez. The Spaniard was nothing more and nothing less than the top scorer in the historic 1987 category for the Blaugrana team and supporters were looking forward to his debut with the first team. As Fábregas recounted on one occasion, Vázquez and Messi competed to see who scored the most goals in games.
Víctor's quality was so great that at only 14 years old he already had a representative. However, still at La Masía he suffered two life-changing injuries: a dislocated kneecap in the first instance and a torn anterior cruciate ligament later. This left him out of the field for almost two years and, upon his return, he was conditioned by the fear of re-injuring himself.
Although he managed to make his debut with FC Barcelona, and even had the luxury of scoring for the Champions League in 2010, the reality is that his time with the first team was anecdotal. In 2011 he left Catalonia and went through Bruges, Cruz Azul, Toronto, Al-Arabi, Umm-Salal, K.A.S Eupen, Los Angeles Galaxy and again Toronto of the MLS, where he currently plays at the age of 36.
