Diego Forlán became one of the most recognized Uruguayan soccer stars worldwide. His time on the European courts left a high fence for the new generations. Within the Charrúa team he marked a new era due to the great quality of his play. In addition, he won the Ballon d'Or at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

His childhood was surrounded by pure soccer. His father was a soccer player, Pablo Forlán, and his grandfather, Juan Carlos Corazzo, served as coach of the Uruguayan National Team in the 1962 World Cup played in Chile.

He made his debut in the first division with the Argentine club Independiente de Avellaneda, where he played until 2022 when he made the leap to Europe, specifically to Alex Ferguson's Manchester United. Then, in 2007, the signing of Diego Forlán by Atlético de Madrid for 23 million euros was confirmed, being one of his best moments. Forlán became the top Uruguayan scorer in the Spanish league with 69 goals.

The 2010 World Cup in South Africa was Forlán's best exposure on the pitch. His talent was decisive in leading the Charrúa team to success, which reached the semifinals of the tournament. Along with that achievement, he shared the title of goalscorer in the competition and took home the Ballon d'Or, an award given to the best player of the tournament. During the 2011 Copa América, where they were champions, they eliminated the Argentine National Team on penalties in the quarterfinals.
