Even with his lack of field time and regularity in FC Barcelona, Memphis Depay has managed to be called for Netherland's matches in the UEFA Nations League. In an interview for ESPN, Depay stated that his role in FC Barcelona was not enough for him and that he was ‘anxiously waiting for the international break’. He claims to be ‘used to play a lot more’ and want's to have more minutes with the Catalan squad.
Depay has gone as far as to question Xavi's decisions regarding his minutes on the pitch and his substitution rate. The striker is a key player for Louis Van Gaal's squad and seems to be confident enough in that environment. Memphis Depay arrived at Barça after 5 succesful years at Olympique de Lyon.

Memphis claims that his time at Barcelona is a competition and he's not afraid of it. He stated that the past season he was the top scorer alongside Aubameyang and he's decided to fight for his position at Barça. Depay's last season with Barcelona closed with 13 goals, 2 assists and 1927 minutes played.
Louis Van Gaal also took a shot at Xavi and said that he would be ‘happier if De Jong and Depay played more often’ and went as far as to say that he spoke with many of his players during the transfer window and ultimately told them to ‘make a decision themselves’.
Memphis showed contempt for the way Xavi Hernandez has been playing him at Barça, specially regarding how he makes him play and doesn't leave him till last minute. Depay claims that the last 25 minutes of every match is where he can shine the most and make the most out of the space that the defenders give him with his physical habilites.
