Lionel Messi loses another of his great friends in the PSG dressing room, as Spanish midfielder Ander Herrera terminated the contract that tied him to the club until 2024 and will return to Athletic Bilbao. The 33-year-old was not in the plans of PSG coach Christophe Galtier, who had kept him out of training with the squad and left him out of the pre-season tour of Japan.

Herrera and Messi had built a great friendship during their time together at PSG. In fact, a few days after the Argentine joined the squad in August 2021, the Spaniard celebrated his birthday and did not hesitate to invite the Argentinean legend.

Messi's debut in the Parisian team was with Herrera by his side. Both came together in the match against Reims, in Ligue 1, replacing Neymar and Wijnaldum. Hours later, Herrera joked about that situation on his social networks: "I had never been applauded so much in a substitution," he wrote on his Instagram account.

The Spanish player always felt comfortable with Messi and beyond their great friendship, he stressed how important he is for any squad.

Herrera had nothing but praise for Messi

"During my career I have come across leaders by word, like Sergio Ramos, and then by example, like Messi. He won his seventh Ballon d'Or and trains and enjoys it as if he were just starting to play now. He doesn't take even one training session as a joke", said the soccer player in a note published by the Spanish media Mundo Deportivo.
