Now that Clausura 2022 is coming to an end and with just over a month before the next Liga MX season starts, one of the lingering questions that left the first semester of the year remains unanswered: what will happen with Club Querétaro?

After the brawl that happened in Week 9 of Clausura 2022 in Estadio Corregidora, Liga MX determined that Gallos Blancos had to be returned to their former owners, Jorgealberto Hank and Grupo Caliente as they haven’t completed the selling of the team.

But they also gave Grupo Caliente until the end of the year to sell the team to a new ownership, who will be able to change the name, relocate the team and even use its place to promote a team from Liga de Expansión, Mexico’s second flight.

So far, there have been a few investors interested in acquiring the team, including Emilio Escalante, owner of Club Atlante, although after Liga MX didn’t approve the team to be considered as one of the few that could play in first division as they lack good training facilities, that option faded away.

A new investor with an $800 million capital is interested

Up until now, all the parties interested were already involved in one way or another with Mexican soccer, including Cuauhtémoc Blanco, who now, as governor of Morelos, was interested in having a Liga MX team in the state for the first time since 2003.

But according to reports from Sportico, a new investor has showed interest in acquiring Gallos Blancos, although this time, he’s from outside Mexican soccer, as Peter Holt, owner of NBA’s San Antonio Spurs, is interested in having a soccer team in Mexico.

Not only that, but he wants to be part of Mexican soccer to increase their presence in the Latino community of the United States and given that Club Querétaro is the team that could be sold with more ease, he has targeted Gallos Blancos as his new team.

Wil the team stay in Querétaro?

Although the investment in Liga MX will be aside from the Spurs Sports & Entertainment, according to reports from Reacción en Cadena, his intention is, at least for now, to leave the team in Querétaro and changing the name, to leave in the past the brawl that has the team in this situation.
