Now that the regular season of Clausura 2022 has come to an end, Liga MX teams are starting to plan what will be the 2022-23 season, especially the ones that didn’t make it into Repechaje, as they know they need to drastically change things if they want to compete in Apertura 2022.

Although Repechaje will give eight teams the possibility of playing in Liguilla and fighting to become the next Liga MX champion given that in Mexico’s top flight 12 out of the 18 teams have a chance of playing the elimination stage-, the losing teams will join the remainder six teams on their search for new projects.

For now, the teams that are already thinking in Apertura 2022 are FC Juárez, who finished the season at the bottom of the table with 11 points; Xolos de Tijuana, who haven’t had a winning season in a while, and Club Querétaro, whose future remains uncertain.

Along them, CD Toluca, Santos Laguna, and Club León are the other teams that were left out of the elimination stage, as Toluca put an end to their worst season in years and Santos and León felt a couple of points short on their pursue of a Repechaje spot.

“Gullit” Peña, with options of returning to one of his former teams

It seemed like Carlos “Gullit” Peña had found at last the regularity that he needed to leave in the past the scandals that almost costed him his career, as he was one of the best players of Guatemalan side Antigua GFC, where he helped them reach the semifinals in Apertura 2021.

But prior the start of Clausura 2022, the Guatemalan team decided to part ways with him, as they couldn’t afford paying him the high salary that he had. Since then, he’s remained a free agent, although he still hasn’t thought about retiring.

According to reports, Club León are interested in signing him once again for a third stint with the Panzas Verdes, as he was an essential player on their pursue for the back-to-back titles that they won in 2014, although they have some conditions for him before agreeing to sign him back.

What are the conditions that León has?

Club León know that even at 32, “Gullit” Peña is still a talented player that could help them in the midfield, especially since he has a good relationship with Luis “Chapito” Montes. But they also know that he’s been involved in several scandals, which is why they are requesting for him to keep a low profile and stay out of parties and clubs. The other condition that they have for Peña is having a lower salary from which he was used to have.
