Lionel Messi shined for Argentina in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, which led to their historic triumph as they lifted the World Cup trophy after beating France 4-2 on penalties. While Argentine took control in the game early, leading 2-0 at halftime, things quickly changed when Kylian Mbappé scored a brace to send the game to extra time. The cameras captured Messi’s reaction after France equalized, and the Argentine star was smiling instead of being upset or worried. Messi revealed his thoughts then, saying, “I felt like football was telling me this cup was not created for me to be its champion. I felt that the 2014 scenario would be repeated and I would be sad, but something inside me told me, ‘Wake up, you fool. This is no longer your dream. It has become the dream of the world.’ And indeed, I stood on my feet again and said, ‘Nothing will stop me.’ Realizing my dream this time.”

The Argentine star didn’t want to relive the 2014 World Cup final, where they were close to winning the game but lost in the end. Many football fans wanted Messi to finally lift the trophy he has been chasing throughout his whole career, and when he did, many fans who weren’t from Argentina also celebrated his win.

After Mbappé scored to make it 2-2, the game went to extra time, and Argentina scored again courtesy of Messi; the ball crossed the line as soon as his shot went past Hugo Lloris. Mbappé scored his hat trick via a penalty in the last minutes of extra time. The penalty shootout was also intense, and Gonzalo Montiel scored the winning penalty to crown Argentina as World Champions.
