Liverpool fans were happy to see their striker Darwin Nuñez shine for the Uruguay national team last night as he scored a hat trick in a 4-0 win against Mexico in a friendly match. Uruguay are preparing for their Copa America, and they are one of the favorites to win the whole tournament. Liverpool fans hope to see this form be displayed next season under their new manager, Arne Slot, as with this hat trick, Nuñez has eight goals in the last five appearances with the Uruguay national team. Not only were Uruguay and Liverpool’s fans amazed by his performances, but so were the Mexican fans at the Empower Field at Mile High Stadium. The Mexican fans were very angry with their national team’s performance, and they cheered “Ole” every time Uruguay passed the ball around the Mexican national team. It was a humiliating loss for Mexico, and the star of the game was Nuñez, who scored two in the first half and completed it in the second half.
Nuñez scored his first goal in the 7th minute of the match. The Liverpool striker tries a cheeky back flick, but as it is blocked, he smashes the ball on the rebound. In the 44th minute, a great play by Maximiliano Araujo led to a pass to Nuñez, who only needed to tap the ball in from close range. His third goal came in the 49th minute as Facundo Pellistri went past the goalkeeper and passed it towards the goal. Nuñez once again taps the ball into the net to complete his hat trick.
Uruguay’s win over Mexico was the last game of preparation ahead of the Copa America. Uruguay played against. Costa Rica last week, but it ended at 0-0. Nuñez will be the main striker of the Uruguayan national team as Luis Suarez was not called up for the Mexico friendly and is unlikely to be called up for the tournament. Edison Cavani announced that he had officially retired from the Uruguay national team and would not be playing in the Copa America. Notable names that missed the Mexico friendly game were Ronald Araujo from FC Barcelona and Federico Valverde from Real Madrid.
Uruguay is one of the favorites to win Copa America 2024 this summer, and they will be playing in Group C, along with the USA, Panama, and Bolivia. Their first match of the Copa America is against Panama on June 23rd at the Hard Rock Stadium. Their second game will be against Bolivia on June 27th at the MetLife Stadium. The final group stage for them will be against the United States on July 1st at the Arrowhead Stadium. If Uruguay advances to the knockout stages, they will be playing against the runners-up or the group winners of Group D, which includes Brazil, Colombia, Paraguay, and Costa Rica.
