Many young USMNT players are choosing to represent America over other countries they can play for, like Sergino Dest or more recently, Efrain Alvarez who joined the USMNT camp for the friendly versus El Salvador at the beginning of the month. But now, there is a case of the opposite happening.

A player who was present in that camp, played that friendly and even scored in the match where USMNT destroyed its rival 6-0, has accepted a call up for another camp, from another national team. He played for America in the youth teams and in that friendly, but nothing of that was senior or official, and can switch allegiances whenever he wants.

This player is Ayo Akinola. The Toronto FC striker accepted the Canada invitation after the good 2020 season he had in MLS. Akinola has three international options: America because he was born in Detroit, Canada, where he has lived for years, or Nigeria, the country of his parents.

If the forward asks for an official switch, his commitment with Canada will be definitive. He is said to be leaning towards playing for that country, knowing he has more chances to play the World Cup Qualifiers this year for them. This camp will take place in Florida and being out of a FIFA window, it will have no influence on his international future.
