After a great season at Newell's Old Boys in Rosario, the defender received several offers to emigrate abroad. But despite the fact that New York City's offer convinced Benfica (the owner of his pass), there was no financial arrangement between the club and the player.

Before that panorama of Lema another Argentine club appeared: Estudiantes de La Plata. The team chaired by former Argentine national team player Juan Sebastian Veron would have offered Benfica $ 2 million for 18 months, something that both the club and the player would see as very positive.

Another club interested in hiring him is Independiente de Avellaneda, but the club is not willing to spend what Estudiantes de La Plata and New York City offered. Against this background, the future of Cristian Lema seems far from the MLS, at least in the short term.
