Winning the first edition of the CONCACAF Nations League, defeating arch-rivals Mexico in extra time, has become an important milestone in the history of the USMNT in international soccer. Compared to the other CONCACAF giant, they are still a long way from reaching the championship level, and there have been more occasions in which El Tri has defeated them in subcontinental matches; and what's more, they are light years behind their female counterparts, who have been world champions on several occasions.

For the same reason, we would like to review the United States' track record in world football, which it officially entered in 1916, but which had its most important boom in the 90s, with the arrival of Major League Soccer (MLS) and the arrival of young talents in European soccer.

United States titles in international soccer

If we take into account its entry into FIFA in 1916, its first participation in a World Cup was in Uruguay 1930, where it finished in third place, and from then on it has participated 10 times, where its best performance was in Korea-Japan 2002, where it reached the quarterfinals after eliminating the Aztecs, but losing to Germany by the minimum score.

It has played in 10 editions of the World Cup. Its best result was third place in the 1930 World Cup in Uruguay, making it the only team outside South America and Europe to have achieved such a place in a World Cup. In the 1950 World Cup in Brazil, they won a historic victory over the inventors of soccer, England, 1-0. After that, the Americans failed in the World Cup qualifiers for many years, until they qualified for the 1990 World Cup in Italy after a 40-year absence.

The U.S. hosted the 1994 World Cup and the team finished in the round of 16. In the 2002 World Cup, they reached the quarterfinals, their second best performance in the World Cups. It has played 7 consecutive editions in the World Cups, from 1990 to 2014. It has won the CONCACAF Gold Cup 6 times in 1991, 2002, 2005, 2007, 2013 and 2017. The national team was champion of the CONCACAF Nations League in the first edition in 2019-20. In the Copa America, it finished fourth twice in 1995 and 2016.

Players such as Bert Patenaude, Walter Bahr, Eric Wynalda, John Harkes, Cobi Jones, Marcelo Balboa, Tab Ramos, Brian McBride, Claudio Reyna, DaMarcus Beasley, Carlos Bocanegra, Tim Howard, Clint Dempsey, Landon Donovan, Michael Bradley, Jozy Altidore and Christian Pulisic, are some of the most important players of the United States team. Its main rival is Mexico, with whom it plays in the CONCACAF classic. In the FIFA Confederations Cup 2009, they managed to beat Spain in the semifinals by 2-0, and played the final against Brazil where they lost by 3-2, finishing as runner-up.

History of USMNT:

The first match played by the U.S. team was against the Canadian team, on November 28, 1885, in Newark, with a score of 0-1 (victory for the Canadian team), however, this match is not internationally recognized, and it is considered that the first official match was the one played in Stockholm, against the Swedish team, on August 20, 1916, where they won 3-2.

In their first appearance at the 1924 Paris Olympics, they played in the first round against Estonia and won 1-0 with a penalty goal by Andy Straden.[3] In the second round, they played against the Uruguayans where they were defeated 3-0 and were out of the tournament.[4] In the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics, they played in the first round against Argentina and were defeated with an impressive score of 11-2.[5] In the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics, they played in the first round against Argentina and were defeated with an impressive score of 11-2.

The team played in the first 1930 World Cup held in Uruguay. The United States was placed in Group D with Belgium and Paraguay. In its debut it faced Belgium, which it defeated 3-0 at the Gran Parque Central Stadium in Montevideo. In the following match, they defeated Paraguay 3-0 and finished first in Group D. Bert Patenaude was considered by FIFA as the first player in history to score a "hat trick" in a World Cup.[6] In the Semifinals, the United States was defeated by Argentina 6-1[7]; despite this, they won third place in the championship, according to FIFA statistics.

In the 1934 World Cup in Italy, the United States participated for the second time in a World Cup after eliminating Mexico 4-2 in Rome.[8] They played in the first round against the local team Italy, but ended up losing 7-1 with a goal by Aldo Donelli in the 57th minute and were eliminated from the World Cup.[9] In their third participation in the World Cup, the United States played in the first round against Argentina, but lost 7-1.

In its third participation in the 1950 World Cup held in Brazil, the United States was placed in Group B along with Spain, Chile and England. In the first match of Group B they faced the Spanish national team, losing 3-1. In the second match, they defeated the English 1-0 with a goal by Joe Gaetjens, being one of the biggest surprises in the history of soccer.[10] But in the next match, they ended up losing 5-2 to Chile and sentencing the elimination of the Americans.
